Otoplasty

What is otoplasty or ear pinning?

Ears that stick out can be a source of embarrassment for kids and adults. Kids will often say that they are teased about their ears, or feel self-conscious. This can affect the person’s self-esteem and through that many other aspects of their life. Otoplasty (ear pinning) can be performed any time after the age of four to boost self-confidence and make them feel more comfortable.

How does otoplasty work?

Although patients of all ages can benefit from otoplasty, young children do particularly well if performed prior to entering school. The ears are “pinned” through incisions behind the ear so they are not visible. Permanent sutures are used for permanent repositioning. We want to make sure the ears stay where we want them. I also address the earlobe at the same time, so the entire ear will be in a natural, flatter position.

What is otoplasty recovery like?

After the surgery, you will have a wrap covering your ears for one night. When we remove this, you will wear an exercise headband to protect them while sleeping for the next two weeks. The ears may be tender for several weeks. There will be some swelling and possibly discoloration. Children usually return to school a week after surgery. Adults often resume normal activities the day after.
